What Is Effective Evangelism?
Evangelist Herb Miller notes the following characteristics of effective evangelism:
- enthusiasm without fanaticism
- urgency without frenzy
- telling the Good News without manipulation
- promotion without pressure
- an appeal to both mind and heart
- calling people to a relationship with God that leads them to love other people
- Theological soundness that leads to social action.
These are common traits in the kind of evangelism Presbyterians most often practice, that is, Friendship Evangelism. This means we consider our faith so important in our lives that when we meet and befriend others, when we find they have no faith or a church home to express that faith we invite them to come to our church and/or encourage them to grow in faith in Jesus Christ.
Friendship Evangelism is rarely, if ever, confrontational, but is expressed in the spirit of love and concern for the other, that they may join you in claiming the greatest gift we have ever been given, the gift of God‟s son, Jesus Christ.
In prayer, ask god for guidance for whom to ask, and the right time and words to make your invitation. God promises to guide us and give us the words when we reach out to others and invite them to church.
